Pell Grant Application 2022
You may also be eligible for state grants and scholarships based upon your Pell Grant eligibility, or some private scholarships such as the Bill Gates Scholarships.
The Federal Pell Grants program is moving toward requiring Pell Grant applicants to use tax data from the IRS to report their income section, based upon their federal tax return. This can be done by using the IRS data retrieval tool during the FAFSA online application process.
Your FAFSA information will determine your EFC or Expected Family Contribution. The lower your EFC means you are more likely to meet the Pell Grant requirements. Typically an EFC of 5500 or less means your Pell Grant eligibility looks good.
What Congress Can Do
- Congress should re-commit to the original intent of the Pell Grant program by doubling the maximum grant amount to $13,000 to restore its purchasing power for low- and moderate-income students struggling to meet college costs.
- Congress should restore the 5% minimum Pell award, as was in place prior to the Higher Education Opportunity Act of 2008, to smooth out steep eligibility cliffs that would result from doubling the Pell Grant.
- Congress should transition the Pell Grant program to fully mandatory funding, and reinstate the automatic inflation adjustment to the maximum award to ensure the grant maintains its purchasing power over time.

How Much Is A Pell Grant
The maximum award for the 2022-23 academic year is $6,895.
But the amount students receive depends on a number of factors, including their expected family contribution to their cost of college, which is determined by their federal student aid application.
Also considered is how much it costs to attend the college, as well as whether the student is enrolled full time or part time and is going for the full academic year or less.
How Does One Apply

Students start by submitting the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, known as theFAFSA. Colleges use the information on the form to determine eligibility for the Pell grant and the size of the award.

Pell Grant Income Limits Are Changing
Students should also be aware of an upcoming rule change.

Low-income families with an income below 175% of the federal poverty level and single parents with an income below 225% of the poverty level will automatically be entitled to receive the maximum Pell Grant award when the changes take effect for the 2023-2024 award year.

What Is The Maximum Income To Qualify For Financial Aid
Although Pell Grant income limits apply, these types of grants are just one of many sources of financial aid available.
There are many other ways to get help paying for your education including federal student loans and work-study programs. Some of these options are available to students whose families have more financial resources.
How Much Money Can I Get From A Pell Grant
A student must have serious financial need in order to qualify for the Pell Grants. A family contribution is calculated using information on the FAFSA, and the expected family contribution is taken from that information. The Pell grant is awarded to students whose family incomes do not allow them to contribute more than a certain amount. Other government assistance is also available, such as subsidized loans. It is possible for the amount to vary from year to year. There is a maximum award of $6,000 for a Federal Pell Grant.
But your actual award depends on three factors:
In the case that you intend to attend college for at least a full academic year. In order to receive Pell Grants for more than one university at once, you need to apply separately. A maximum of 12 semesters or its equivalent may be covered by the Pell Grant. The Pell Grant will warn you when you are approaching this limit.

Doubling The Maximum Pell Grant: A Necessary Investment
Doubling the maximum Pell Grant to $13,000 would increase the grant amounts received by current recipients. Current recipients of the maximum Pell Grant those with an expected family contribution of zero would see their grant double. All other current recipients would receive a Pell Grant award increase of the same dollar amount as the increase received by maximum award recipients. Doubling the maximum Pell Grant to $13,000 would also expand the EFC range that qualifies students for Pell, in turn extending eligibility to some additional, moderate-income students who do not currently qualify for the grant.
Along with doubling the maximum Pell Grant to $13,000, NASFAA recommends lawmakers consider enacting a minimum Pell Grant award of 5% of the maximum award . This would allow students who qualify for at least 5% of the maximum award to receive a grant, maintaining the minimum award closer to its current level and removing the possibility of a steep eligibility cliff for students whose EFCs fall just outside of the Pell-eligible range.
While costly, doubling the Pell Grant simply makes up for necessary investments in federal student aid that have been pushed off for decades. And, unlike broad-scale debt forgiveness, doubling the Pell Grant is targeted to students with the greatest need, and represents a sustainable, front-end, and long-term solution to college access and affordability issues impacting lower-income students.
