Dissertation Research Travel Scholarships

University of Missouri doctoral students who have successfully completed doctoral comprehensive examinations are eligible for Dissertation Research Travel Scholarships to support their dissertation research.

Students from any graduate program are eligible to apply for the Dissertation Research Travel Scholarship.

Students may apply for funding up to $500 to provide financial assistance for travel associated with their dissertation research. A graduate student may receive only one travel scholarship for either the Dissertation Research Travel or Professional Presentation Travel during their time at MU.

Students must be enrolled in order to apply and travel must be completed while they are graduate students at MU. All university-related travel that is supported fully or in part by a Graduate School travel scholarship must be registered in advance of the travel. Please consult your department or program about the process they will follow for supervisor approval.

Deans Graduate Student Travel Support

As of October 7, 2022, please note that all travel funding for 2022-2023 has been awarded. If additional funding becomes available, the Office of Graduate Studies will notify graduate students who are subscribed to the COE Grad Mailing List.

Partial support, up to $500, is available for College of Education graduate students who will be attending a regional, national, or international conference. College of Education funds are available to students who have authored or co-authored an accepted paper that will be presented at the conference donor funds are available to any graduate students who wishes to attend a conference. This award is on a first-come, first-served basis, and the maximum award amount that students can receive per academic year is $500. Each fall, the Office of Graduate Studies will send an email to College of Education graduate students who are subscribed to the COE Grad Mailing List with an announcement that applications are open. Applications will be accepted and reviewed until the funds are depleted. Funds must be used by May 31.

Travel Grant Request Form

The Graduate School is pleased to announce that travel grants are available to assist graduate students presenting papers and poster sessions at professional meetings and conferences. This includes costs incurred from online events such as registration and conference fees. Travel grants are also available to students who are attending professional development workshops and seminars that will enhance their research agendas.

No more than two travel grants per academic year will be awarded to each individual, who must be a current graduate student at the time of the application and travel. Travel grants will not exceed $200 per student per conference, or $400 per student per academic year. Students seeking a travel grant must make a request for one prior to the date of their conference or meeting.

Students receiving travel grants will be expected to participate in the Graduate Research Conference during Graduate Student Appreciation Week, which is held each year in early spring. Also, the names of travel grant recipients will be posted on the graduate school website.

What Happens After I Submit My Application

Applications are reviewed on a quarterly basis throughout the year. Not all eligible applications will be funded. If you are eligible and not funded in the cycle you applied, you may still be considered for funding in future cycles. Please email if your travel plans change. Once notified of an award decision, you should follow the instructions in the award letter to officially accept the award.

When Should I Apply

Applications for the Student Research Grants Competition funds are reviewed quarterly.

• Cycle 1: This cycle has concluded. It covered travel starting between July 1, 2022 and September 30, 2022.
• Cycle 2: This cycle has concluded. It covered travel starting between October 1, 2022 and December 31, 2022.
• Cycle 3: For travel starting between January 1, 2023 and March 31, 2023. Tentative application dates will be January 2 through January 20, with decisions announced by January 31.
• Cycle 4: For travel starting between April 1, 2023 and June 30, 2023. Tentative application dates will be April 3 through April 21, with decisions announced by April 28.

Research Travel Award Payments

• Payments to domestic students and international students considered resident aliens for tax purposes must be paid through the Bursars Office.
• International students with non-resident alien status for tax purposes must be paid through payroll. If you are selected as a Research Travel Award recipient, you may need to submit additional documentation before you can receive the funding. The process you will need to follow will be based on whether you have already held an appointment at UWMadison.
• If you have already held an appointment, the Glacier system through the UWMadison HR Office will follow up with you to determine if you need to submit additional documentation.
• If you have not held any appointment, the Graduate School Payroll Coordinator will send you a letter requesting a W-4 form and a direct deposit form before your information is forwarded to the UWMadison HR Office.

Graduate School Travel Grants

The Jacob K. Goldhaber Travel Grant and the International Conference Student Support Award help defray the expenses incurred by UMD graduate students who are traveling to scholarly, scientific, or professional conferences to present papers, posters, or other scholarly material. Students may receive each award twice during their graduate education at UMD, once before the achievement of candidacy and a second time after the achievement of candidacy. To be eligible, students must be presenting a paper, poster, or other types of presentation and must be enrolled at UMD at the time of travel.

Goldhaber Eligibility: The Goldhaber Award is a matching grant and requires that student secure funding from an internal or external source prior to submitting an application. Please see complete guidelines for additional information.

ICSSA Eligibility: The ICSSA pays the registration fee for conferences located outside of the United States. Award maximum is $500.

Application Process: Applications and all supporting materials must be received in the Graduate School before the travel dates. Students, please inform your department’s business office about your travel grant application. Submit application to apps.gradschool.umd.edu/GSAwardsSystem. Please note, these travel awards are reimbursement awards. Awarded students need to keep receipts and submit them to their department’s business office.

We Are Currently Accepting Applications For Dean’s Travel Grant Awards For 2022

The Graduate Dean’s Research Travel Grant is designed to assist members of the graduate student community with travel to:

• present original work at conferences
• attend workshops, professional development or programs pertinent to their graduate projects

Almost 300 students were awarded a travel grant during the 2021-22 academic year. The total amount of funds available and the number of applications varies, and each application period is treated as an independent award process. The process is tailored to approve the maximum number of applications during each call, while maintaining a useful award size. Any unspent funds from the first call for applications will be awarded during a second call in Spring, 2023.

Study Abroad Programs With Scholarships

Summer study programs can be found for any course of study and also for varying terms so that the program can fit into any interested students summer, even with other plans already in place. A number of organizations provide connections to programs all over the world and also provide opportunity to apply for a scholarship to help with the financial aspects of such a trip.

CIEEs study abroad programs are available in numerous countries and a variety of areas of study. Scholarships are also available to assist with the financial side of studying and living abroad for any period of time.

In order to apply for a scholarship for a CIEE program, visit www.ciee.org. This web site provides details of the scholarship application, which requires an essay detailing objectives and financial need, among other things. Also, the scholarship has two annual deadlines, allowing for a second chance if the first deadline is missed.

Other alternatives include similar programs with CEA Global Education, CCIS Study Abroad, Academic Studies Abroad, just to name a few of the many options available. All of these sites offer details on the programs a student can choose and any financial assistance that can be attained for the adventure.

Doctoral Student Travel Grants

The Academic Senate is now accepting applications for the 2022-23 Doctoral Student Travel Grants.The Doctoral Student Travel Grant awards travel funds to graduate students who have been invited or selected to present a paper, present research, perform or exhibit at a major professional conference or meeting. Applicants must be doctoral students who have advanced to candidacy, or Master of Fine Arts students who are in their second year of study and in candidacy prior to travel. Students are eligible to receive two in-person Doctoral Student Travel Grants, one of which may be used for international travel, during their graduate career at UCSB. A student who receives a grant for a virtual conference will still be eligible to receive two grants for in-person conferences. Deadline is at least 21 days in advance of travel.

The funding for the 2022-23 Doctoral Student Travel Grant is split into two equal pools:

• Pool One: Conference travel between July 1, 2022 and December 31, 2022
• Pool Two: Conference travel between January 1, 2023 and June 30, 2023

The Graduate Council has put these guidelines in place to help ensure that the grant funding will be distributed equally among those students attending conferences at the beginning and the end of the year.

Applications will be accepted for each pool until the funds are expended.

GPSA created a Travel Grant program to award graduate and professional students grants of up to $300 for in-state and up to $500 for out-of-state travel to conferences where you will present your own professional work. This program is funded by GPSA, Graduate Division, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and the Office of the Chancellor.

Four rounds of applications will be held each year, one during each quarter. Funding will be awarded randomly from the full pool of eligible applications. Applicants must be presenting a paper or giving a talk on their own original research.

Spring 2023 Travel Grants/virtual Conference Deadline: March 1 Before 5 Pm

WMU graduate students may receive a maximum of two Research Grants, or two Travel Grants, or one of each grant type at these degree levels: masters, specialist. Doctoral students may receive a maximum of three Research Grants or Travel Grants, or a combination of both, up to three total. Note: the typing go theses, dissertations, and project paper, as well as the purchase of computers or supplies and equipment commonly provided by departments or by other existing grants or funds do not qualify as legitimate budget expenses under a Graduate Student Travel Grant.

John D Bies International Travel Scholarships

University of Missouri doctoral candidates are eligible for the John D. Bies International Travel Award.

The John D. Bies International Travel Scholarship endowment was established by Dr. John Bies, who earned a doctorate from Mizzou in 1972. Bies believes students who travel frequently and have an opportunity to interact with diverse people are better equipped to become members of a global society. Although Bies attended Buffalo State College in New York for his undergraduate and masters degrees, he chose to establish the travel endowment at the University of Missouri because of the impact he says Mizzou had on his life. During his time here, he says, he was instilled with a work ethic and strong values.

The John D. Bies International Travel award provide opportunities to PhD students to build knowledge of culture and language from regions of the world students would otherwise not have the opportunity to experience. Thus, a goal of the Bies award is to facilitate international travel outside a students country of origin. This award can be used to defray expenses associated with travel to international professional meetings or training programs, to libraries, archives or manuscript repositories, art museums, archaeological or geological sites, or special interviews. It can also fund travel expenses related to international internships with governments, non-governmental organizations, businesses, or institutions of higher education. Awards of up to $4,000 will be granted.

Delaying The Real World And Circumnavigators Grants

For those who want to travel to expand their horizons without the consideration of further education, grants are available for you too. The Delaying the Real World travel grant is for individuals age 21-29 who do not intend to seek further education and yet are not ready to find a career path and join the working world.

A book, Delaying the Real World by Colleen Kinder, is a resource of ideas to be able to make money for necessities while avoiding the full-time job that may normally require. The book is recommended as a must-read for anyone who is awarded the Delaying the Real World fellowship. More information can be found at www.delayingtherrealworld.com.

Circumnavigator grants are designed for undergraduate students between their junior and senior years who want to complete a round-the-world study project during the summer. The program was created through a partnership between Northwestern University and the Circumnavigators Club Foundation.

Up to a $9,000 grant will be awarded to the individual that plans to visit at least five different countries on three different continents. Application Information And Timeline

Awards for domestic and international research travel are available to UWMadison graduate students traveling to conduct research supporting their dissertation, thesis, or final exhibition. Research travel award applications are reviewed on a quarterly basis during the academic year. Priority will be given to dissertators and final-year MFA students, and to those who have not previously received an SRGC Research Travel or Conference Presentation Award.

Application Guidelines And Instructions

This program has been established to support travel costs for graduate students who present research results in-person at scientific meetings and symposia. The program will support costs of that travel up to a limit of $600 per fiscal year.

Awards are made on a first-come, first-served basis, until the funds for this program have been exhausted.

Eligibility

• Eligibility for this program is restricted to UConn Health graduate students provided that their faculty preceptor for the research is based at UConn Health.
• In order to be eligible, applicants must have a research paper or poster accepted for presentation, and that paper must be related to the graduate students thesis or dissertation research.
• Only one presenter per abstract will be eligible for funding under the travel grants program, first author having precedence for an award.

The Graduate Schools Professional Presentation Travel Scholarship is offered to students to help defray transportation expenses* associated with travel to professional conferences.

Students may apply for funding up to $500 to provide financial assistance for their presentation travel. A graduate student may receive only one travel scholarship for either the Dissertation Research Travel or Professional Presentation Travel during their time at MU.

Students must be enrolled in order to apply, and travel must be completed while they are graduate students at MU. All university-related travel that is supported fully or in part by a Graduate School travel scholarship must be registered in advance of the travel .

Conditions Of The Grant

• Financial support includes the cost of a round-trip economy class airplane ticket via the most direct route between the home university and the host university, and subsistence cost for the duration of the travel. In the case of Travel Grants for Research and Credit, the subsistence cost is limited to a maximum duration of one semester or five months. The grant does not include funds for research.
• The grantee shall notify the UC Secretariat in writing of the date of arrival at the host university and the date of return at the home university. He/she is also obliged to submit to the UC Secretariat a full report of his/her program activities at the host university, with a duly certified grade report for each of the courses cross-enrolled, if any, and immediately return to his/her home university upon completion of the engagement period stated in the award letter.

Spring Travel Grant application will open on January 2, 2023, and will fund travel occurring from January 1st to May 31st.

**Please note this is a new addition to the GSC Travel Grant. If UofL restricts non-essential travel, GSC will only fund membership and registration costs of conferences.

• After submitting your travel grant application you will receive a system generated e-mail of submission confirmation. If you do not receive this e-mail, your application was not received by the GSC Travel Director. You should resubmit your application.

• You will be notified of your funding status through the e-mail address you provide in your application. Please ensure the e-mail you provide it accurate.

We offer:

• Up to $200 for graduate students attending a conference or workshops or to attend interviews to do externships required by your degree .
• Up to $350 for graduate students presenting at a conference.

Only one award is permitted per semester to allow more students the opportunity to receive the reward. This may change if funds permit.
