Types Of Grant Programs
The National Institute of Health provides a search tool to help you explore the types of grant funding that they offer, from research grants to career development awards, research training and fellowships, center grants, and more.
NIH uses activity codes to differentiate the wide variety of programs they support. NIH institutes and centers may vary in the way they use activity codes not all Institutes and centers accept applications for all types of grant programs or they apply specialized eligibility criteria. Look closely at the funding opportunity announcement to determine which institutes and centers participate and the specifics of eligibility.
It Is A No Brainer But You Need To Learn The Lingo And To Start On Time
As an NIH novice you need to learn many new abbreviations, from AOR, SO, DUNS, SAMS, Grant.gov, Assist and the list goes on and on and on Do not worry you will get the jest. As fresh NIH applicant you also need to register your organization at several different sites. This registration process can take up to 6 -8 weeks and you should organize this well in advance. Thus, make sure to spot your favorite FOA in time to not miss out on the best NIH grant for you project.
Before Submission Of A Grant Application And Every 4 Years
The McGill PI and all Investigators following McGill FCOI Policy have to complete the NIH FCOI tutorial. The NIH Financial Conflict of Interest tutorial was designed by the National Institutes of Health to provide education training on what constitutes a financial conflict of interest. It provides guidance on the proper policies and practices regarding these issues and is required for anyone involved with an NIH funded project. Please visit the NIHs website to take the online tutorial.

Perspective: Income Inequality In The United States And Europe Population Data
In order to put these NIH-specific data into perspective, we present high-level income equality data for general populations of the United States and the European Union. We show data from the World Inequality Database , which was developed by Emmanuel Saez and colleagues.
Figure 10 shows percent of annual income going to the top centile and the bottom half of the populations of the United States and Europe from 1980 to 2020. We focus on income, instead of wealth, since income for most people comes from remuneration for work and therefore would be analogous to RPG funding awarded in anticipation of scientific work. At all times, income inequality has been greater in the United States. Changes in inequality have also been greater in the United States. From 1995 to 2019, the proportion of income going to the top centile of the United States population has increased from 14.3% to 18.7%, a relative increase of 31%. During the same time, the proportion of RPG funding going to the top centile of RPG PIs has increased from 8.3% to 10.8% , a relative increase of 30%. Although the US population and NIH-funded PIs have experienced different events e.g., the 2000 recession and the 2008 financial crash for the US population the NIH doubling, the 2006 payline crash, the 2013 sequestration, and the recent string of budget increases for NIH-funded PIs the overall relative changes in inequality at the top are remarkably similar.
Notable Discoveries And Developments

Since its inception, the NIH intramural research program has been a source of many pivotal scientific and medical discoveries. Some of these include:
NIH Toolbox
In September 2006, the NIH Blueprint for Neuroscience Research started a contract for the NIH Toolbox for the Assessment of Neurological and Behavioral Function to develop a set of state-of-the-art measurement tools to enhance collection of data in large cohort studies. Scientists from more than 100 institutions nationwide contributed. In September 2012, the NIH Toolbox was rolled out to the research community. NIH Toolbox assessments are based, where possible, on Item Response Theory and adapted for testing by computer.
Database of Genotypes and Phenotypes
NIH sponsors the Database of Genotypes and Phenotypes , a repository of information produced by studies investigating the interaction of genotype and phenotype. The information includes phenotypes, molecular assay data, analyses and documents. Summary-level data is available to the general public whereas the individual-level data is accessible to researchers.

Characteristics Of The Most Highly Funded Rpg Principal Investigators
Table 1 shows characteristics of 34,936 principal investigators funded in fiscal year 2020 according to whether or not they were among the top funded centile. We defined proxies for career stage according to age, with values of early , middle , and late . Compared to the bottom 99%, the top 1% of investigators were in later career stages and more likely to be white, non-Hispanic, and to hold an MD degree . The difference in funding levels is striking, with top 1% investigators receiving a median of $4.8 million compared to $0.4 million for all others they were also much more likely to be supported on multiple RPG grants.

Intramural And Extramural Research
NIH devotes 10% of its funding to research within its own facilities , and gives > 80% of its funding in research grants to extramural researchers. Of this extramural funding, a certain percentage must be granted to small businesses under the SBIR/STTR program. As of 2011, the extramural funding consisted of about 50,000 grants to more than 325,000 researchers at more than 3000 institutions. By 2018, this rate of granting remained reasonably steady, at 47,000 grants to 2,700 organizations. In FY 2010, NIH spent US$10.7bn on clinical research, US$7.4bn on genetics-related research, US$6.0bn on prevention research, US$5.8bn on cancer, and US$5.7bn on biotechnology.

The National Institutes of Health, commonly referred to as NIH , is the primary agency of the United States government responsible for biomedical and public health research. It was founded in the late 1880s and is now part of the United States Department of Health and Human Services. The majority of NIH facilities are located in Bethesda, Maryland, and other nearby suburbs of the Washington metropolitan area, with other primary facilities in the Research Triangle Park in North Carolina and smaller satellite facilities located around the United States. The NIH conducts its own scientific research through the NIH Intramural Research Program and provides major biomedical research funding to non-NIH research facilities through its Extramural Research Program.
As of 2013, the IRP had 1,200 principal investigators and more than 4,000 postdoctoral fellows in basic, translational, and clinical research, being the largest biomedical research institution in the world, while, as of 2003, the extramural arm provided 28% of biomedical research funding spent annually in the U.S., or about US$26.4 billion.

Do You Have Unique Technology Or Knowledge That Is Not Available In The Us
Before you start your NIH grant, make sure that reviewers will not ask: Why should the US pay for something that US researchers can do as well? The single most important criteria to be successful at NIH is to bring technology, innovation and knowledge that they do not have in the US.
NIH specially welcomes non-US key opinion leaders that can advance science in the US. If you are not a Key opinion leader yet, you should not worry. Do your homework and team up with a US key Opinion Leader in your field to collaborate with.

Pitch Yourself And Your Project To The Nih Project Officer

The NIH funding scheme consist on many specific funding opportunities announcements . All with a very distinct set of requirements.
Before you start writing you should start with the following exercise:
- What are the objectives of the FOA and objectives of the NIH departments
- What are the objectives of your project: called Specific Aims in NIH jargon
- Make sure the Specific Aims match with the objectives of the FOA
- Identify the required expertise for your project and when possible identify consortium partners to collaborate with
The next step is a crucial one. Most FOAs ask you to send a letter of Intent. Take this opportunity and do more! Each FOA has a dedicated project officer who is often a scientist from the field. Use the LOI to get in contact with the project officer and pitch your Specific Aims during a phone call. This will help you to align your project with the goals of the FOA.

Information Regarding Financial Conflict Of Interest
Where Subrecipient/External Investigators who are following their institutions FCOI Policy are found to have a FCOI, the Subrecipient institution must report to McGill the FCOI before awarded funds are released, annually, and within 30 days of a new FCOI being identified. Please see McGills procedure on the US Public Health Service Financial Conflict of Interest Regulations here.
Nih Era Commons Account
In order to submit an NIH application, the primary investigator must have an eRA Commons ID. To use the NIH eRA Commons, all PIs submitting to NIH will need an active account with a username and password.
To activate your account, email or call 624-5599 and reference “NIH eRA Commons.” You will be referred to a SPA staff member who will create your account while you are on the phone. This process takes only a couple of minutes, during which the staff member will ask for your:
- First name, middle initial, and last name
- University email address
Once your eRA Commons account has been set up, NIH will send you an email within three days that contains your user name and a temporary password.

Distribution Of Funding To Rpg Pis Over Time
Figure 1 shows different measures of funding distribution to RPG PIs between fiscal years 1985 to 2020. These measures reflect different approaches that economists use to assess income inequality here we use RPG funding as the analogue of income. We use three different measures:
-
Proportion of funds going to the top 1%, or centile, as well as to the top 10%, or decile, in contrast to the proportion to the bottom 50% or considered alone .
-
Standard deviation of the log of funding , a measure that accounts for the well-documented skewness in funding and that is particularly sensitive to low and intermediate levels of funding .
-
The Theil T index , a measure that is more sensitive to higher levels of funding . Unlike other measures of inequality, the Theil Index is not intuitive. However, it can be used to parse group data, allowing us to parse inequality into within group and between group components for example, we can see whether there is a greater degree of inequality between men and women as opposed to within cohorts of men and women.
