Grants For Summer Camp
Now that you know some of the logistics of how to start a summer camp, it is time to think about finances. Starting a business of any kind is expensive, but especially if you are looking to start a day camp or sleepaway camp that requires renting or buying land, the costs add up.
Grants are a great way to mitigate some of the cost of starting a summer camp. Weâll break down the different types of grants for summer camp so that you can find which ones work best for your business.
Federal grants
Most of the time, federal grants are reserved for nonprofit and educational organizations. Therefore, if you are running a camp focused on serving a specific population or teaching a specific topic, these might be a good fit for you. To narrow down your research and save time, focus on looking for federal grants covering your topic or camper demographic.
City and state grants
Check out what grants are offered by the state and city in which you will run your camp. Many states and cities offer grants to organizations that support youth programming and enrichment programs for children. If you are interested in starting a camp in New York City, you can use the New York City Grant Watch to find opportunities for funding.

Assistance Offered From Camps
Camps offer special discountsfor everything from early registration, full-season, multiple enrollments from one family, to late registration to fill an empty spot. For families who enroll early, many camps also offer a structured payment plan throughout the year, so camp costs are not incurred all at once. In addition, many camps offer “camperships”partial or total scholarships and financial assistance. Parents shouldn’t assume their income doesn’t qualify. Ask your camp what payment or assistance programs they offer. Ask early.

Grants From An Organization
If you are starting a kids’ summer camp as part of a larger organization, also look within that organization for funding. For example, many church summer camps can request funding from their denominations, while chapters of established nonprofits, such as the YMCA or Boys and Girls Clubs, might first try their national organizations. Further, if you are running a summer camp devoted to a particular hobby or subject, try looking to organizations that also promote that hobby or subject. For example, if you are starting a music camp, ask local music stores for funds. If you are running a writing camp, ask local writers’ groups to contribute.

Summer Camp Grant Proposal
Now that you have an understanding of the available grants for summer camps, you need to learn how to write a grant proposal. Almost all grant proposals are organized in the same format, however, it is vital that you check the instructions and requirements for each individual grant in case they have any differences.
In general, grant proposals need the following items to be considered:
When you write your summer camp grant proposal, make sure you are as specific as possible. Donât just copy the proposal and replace the name of the organization. Instead, personalize each section so that it speaks to the organizationâs mission, values, and goals for the grant. This might take more time on the writing and planning side, but it will increase your chances of winning the grant, so it is a good investment.
Starting a summer camp is a lot of work, but watching the campers smile and make memories that will last a lifetime is worth it. If you are looking to spend less time on administrative tasks and more time on the fun side of running a camp, Sawyer is the best camp registration and management software for both in-person and online summer camps.

State Announces Grants For Summer Youth Camps

By: May 10, 20227:48 am
Gov. Phil Murphy and Human Services Commissioner Sarah Adelman announced May 9 that $10 million in grants are being made available for summer youth camps.
Officials say the funding will be used to help cover operational expenses and to provide financial assistance to eligible families.
This funding represents my administrations continued commitment to supporting New Jersey families by strengthening the services they rely upon, said Murphy. Summer youth camps serve as an essential child care option for working parents by providing a safe and enriching environment for children while school is out of session. Supporting these providers and making these services more affordable will benefit many families in the coming months.
Summer camp is not just a tradition but a necessity for many working families, said Human Services Commissioner Sarah Adelman. UNSPLASH
The summer camp grants range from $7,500 to $25,000, depending on enrollment and the length of the camps operating season. Eligible providers must be licensed by the Department of Children and Families and approved by the Department of Health to operate a summer camp for the 2022 summer camp season.
Under the conditions of the program, half of the grant must be used to provide financial assistance to families not eligible for child care assistance, while the other half be used to pay for operational expenses.
Providers can apply at njccis.com/njccis/home.

How Will My Grant Award Be Calculated
- Every eligible provider will receive a base award and bonus payments for providing in demand care.
- The base award will be based on your licensed capacity and provider type.
- Bonus payments will be added to your award based on whether you provide care for: infants and toddlers, child care subsidy children, provide care during non-traditional hours, caring for a child with special needs and have a Great Start to Quality star rating.
- View the grant calculator to see how grant awards will be made.
- Please note: This award is tentative and assumes that 100% of eligible child care providers apply. Final grant awards will be calculated based on the actual number of applicants. Your final award may be higher!
