NASE members are eligible to apply every month for up to $4,000 in grants for their small businesses, and they are also eligible for an annual scholarship of $3,000 for their dependents that pays for college tuition. Deadline To Apply For Small Business Grants Is Sept 15
Funds are still available for small business grants available from the state of Mississippi. The deadline is Sept. 15, 2020 to apply for access these funds.
Here is an update on how to see if you can benefit from this relief.For both of these types of assistance, businesses must have 50 or fewer employees, have filed their 2018 or 2019 state taxes, and meet other eligibility criteria as described in the link below.
- Direct Payment of $2,000: The Mississippi Department of Revenue is still distributing $2,000 payments directly to eligible businesses with less than 50 employees. The types of eligible businesses was just expanded this week. The Department has already begin distributing these payments as paper checks through the mail. Small businesses must be in one of the following NCAIS code categories: 311811, 4421, 4422, 4481, 4482, 4483, 4511, 4512, 4531, 4532, 4533, 4539, 487210, 5121, 6116, 6244, 7111, 7112, 7113, 7131, 7139, 7223, 7224, 7225 or 8121. - Grants up to $25,000: The Mississippi Back to Business program, which makes small business grants available for which small business may apply, still has funds available. Businesses can apply directly at backtobusinessms.org.
To expand the amount of relief available to Mississippi businesses, some important changes have been made to the program:
Emergency Small Business Grants
- Lawmakers appropriated $60 million for “automatic” grants of $2,000 each, no application necessary, administered by Department of Revenue.
- Initially, more than 29,000 shops of various categories temporarily shuttered by statewide shutdowns would be eligible. Lawmakers expanded this to potentially add thousands more businesses.
- Grants approved: 16,617, for a total of $33 million. This means that $27 million of the appropriated funding went unspent.

- Of the initial list, the Department of Revenue reported about 25% of businesses had not paid state taxes in a timely manner, a prerequisite for the program.
The business grants did help thousands of small businesses, eventually. Legislative leaders said they were in uncharted water with the program, and under an extremely tight deadline imposed by Congress to spend the money. Other problems included thousands of businesses not having paid their state taxes in a timely fashion a perennial problem in Mississippi. And the Mississippi Development Authority, which administered the largest grant program, asked to be allowed to increase administrative spending for it from $900,000 to $3.6 million to get it moving more quickly and smoothly. Lawmakers denied this request.

The City of Jacksons Office of Economic Development is proud to announce the re-launch of the CDBG Special Economic Development-related grant programs. These programs include the Small Business Resiliency & Safe Practices grant which will provide funding to businesses up to $30,000 to ensure safe operation and sustainability. Since the pandemic, the Office of Economic Development has focused on small business development, workforce training, local tourism and retail recruitment/retention. Staff have created several programs, partnerships and projects that will positively impact the citizens of Jackson.
Forthcoming projects, such as the Pathways to Human Dignity Workforce Development opportunity and the Creativepreneur-based Incubator, both funded by W.K. Kellogg, will reach directly to employees, potential entrepreneurs and creatives. These initiatives are ideal for people looking for upwardly mobile career pathways or those wanting to learn methods to monetize their current skill set. COVID-19 Relief Payment Fund $60 million in $2,000 grants to small businesses that were forced to close in response to the pandemic.

JACKSON The U.S. Small Business Administration has awarded the Mississippi Development Authority $600,000 for the State Trade Expansion Program to support Mississippi business interested in international trade.
This funding is instrumental for Mississippi businesses wanting to grow their business by increasing international trade opportunities, said MDA Deputy Director Laura Hipp.
The STEP funding will be used to support export development and trade endeavors for eligible small businesses. From 2019 to date, STEP funds awarded to Mississippi have assisted over 200 companies as they participated in state-led global business development missions, which have resulted in more than $77 million in actual and projected sales.
STEP allows MDA to provide financial and technical assistance to small- and medium-sized Mississippi companies interested in growing their businesses through trade. Administered by MDAs International Trade Office, the program reduces some of the financial obstacles qualifying businesses face when identifying export opportunities.
The program also helps offset certain costs related to taking part in trade missions and other international business development activities. It reimburses eligible businesses up to 50% of their travel costs, provides translation services at no cost, customized and pre-arranged business development appointments with prospective international qualified buyers, and transportation assistance.
