Arizona Governor Doug Ducey advocated for and invested $10 million of federal stimulus monies for public schools, local governments, and other entities to improve access to reliable and safe transportation and to support K-12 transportation innovation and efficiency solutions. In July 2021, A for Arizona also won a competitive bid thru the Arizona Department of Administration to administer the Arizona Transportation Modernization Grants totaling $20 million in FY22 to spark transit solutions and support those who want to develop and embrace additional options for better transporting K-12 public school students.

All three investments could have strong positive impacts on students, depending on the way in which additional staff or salary increases are used to improve learning. In other words, more teachers would have the most powerful impact if they were qualified and effective. The addition of school counselors would be valuable if they were given enough time, resources and support to improve student well-being and school culture and climate.
Interactive charts, available here, demonstrate, at the district level, what these staffing changes would cost. We estimate a cost of $75,000 per district per new teacher or new school counselor. This is based on the average teacher salary in Arizona of $50,000, plus benefits and costs to hire and train staff.

Black Womens Task Force Scholarship
Scholarships and grants for women of specific races are available from some organizations headquartered within the state. For example, the Black Womens Task Force offers scholarship assistance to African American women pursuing a college degree in southern Arizona.

Safety Grant Applications Reveal School Security Needs Across Arizona
PHOENIX — Locks that dont actually lock, outdated communications systems and no funding for security guards. Those are three examples of security needs revealed in a handful of US Justice Department grant applications obtained by Arizonas Family Investigates.
The grants were all approved and funded by the federal government, but they offer a snapshot of the safety concerns and needs of school districts across Arizona. And they come at a time when gunfire incidents on school campuses in the United States appear to be increasing.

The grant application submitted by officials from the Cartwright School District, located in west Phoenix, offers a stark example of what teachers, students and staff face. The application states, Students and faculty regularly hear gunshots while in class. Between 2017 and 2021, Cartwright experienced seven incidents of student firearm possession on campus.
According to the organization, Everytown for Gun Safety, schools across the US saw 202 incidents of gunfire on campus last year. That resulted in 49 deaths and 126 injuries.
The mass shooting in May at a grade school in Uvalde, Texas, served as an example of a worst-case scenario of what could happen. A lone gunman murdered 19 students and two teachers. It was a wake up call to us that this type of thing can happen anywhere, said Mike Pooley, the Apache Junction police chief.

Scholarships For Specific Student Populations
Several organizations in Arizona make scholarships available to students from specific backgrounds. For example, the Arizona Cowpunchers Scholarship Organization makes college grant money available to Arizonans with a parent who is either an employee or owner of a ranch.
The organization Arizona Families for Home Education offers scholarship assistance to students who have been homeschooled Arizona Homeschool Scholarship Fund awards are valued at a minimum of $500.
Kids Chance of Arizona offers scholarships to some students between the ages of 16 and 25 whose parent was killed or permanently disabled in a workplace accident.
The 100 Club of Arizona offers scholarships to the families of active, retired, injured or deceased public safety officers or firefighters.

The Horatio Alger Association, together with the Walter and Suzanne Scott Foundation, offers 10 $5,000 scholarships each year to graduating high school seniors from Arizona who have overcome adversity.
The Arizona College Access Aid Program
This grant is established through the Governors office, as part of the College Access Challenge Grant program. The grant targets Arizona students exhibiting high levels of financial need, and is offered to students enrolled in two- or four-year colleges.
To qualify, students must be seeking Associates or Bachelors degrees. Like many grants, funds are limited, so they are dispensed on a first-come, first-served basis. Students are free to apply for this grant along with the SLEAP grant, but due to funding limitations, each student will only be allowed to accept one of the awards. This grant doesnt renew automatically, so students must reapply each year. Maximum funding is worth $2000 annually, and if the student is unsuccessful in obtaining a degree, this award must be repaid.

Funding For Student Poverty
Arizona is one of just eight states that does not account for student poverty in its school funding formula. The state provides similar levels of funding to low-poverty and high-poverty school districts. Yet additional funding for low-income students is vital to provide them with the education resources and opportunities they need to achieve. Funds specifically designated for these students are necessary to support research-proven programs and practices, such as high quality early childhood education, additional instructional supports, and the hiring of high-quality teachers. Additional funding is even more important for districts and schools serving high concentrations of students in poverty.
Arizonas highest poverty districts have the lowest proficiency levels in Math and English Language Arts in the state. As Figure 2 shows, less than one in four students in these districts tests proficient in either subject.

K-12 Title 1 Arizona public, charter school teachers can apply for $500 grant
PHOENIX Arizona Public Service Co. is helping local teachers get ready for the upcoming academic year with grants for classroom resources. Marking its fifth year, the APS Supply My Class program will award 500 K-12 Title 1 public or charter school teachers with $500 grants.
As students return to school, teachers are gearing up for the year and in many cases spending their own money to ensure their class is stocked with all of the essentials, said Tina Marie Tentori, Director of Community Affairs for APS. In less than a minute, educators can apply for an APS Supply My Class grant that can help ease out-of-pocket expenses and allow them to focus on whats most importantpreparing Arizonas future leaders.
Over the APS Supply My Class programs first four years, 3,000 teachers have received grants totaling $1.5 million. These grants have helped teachers purchase basic school supplies, refresh their classrooms, buy new chairs and more.
Teachers in APSs service territory can apply for a chance to be selected as a grant recipient through Sept. 15 at SupplyMyClass.com. APS will randomly select 100 teachers per week starting Aug. 19 through Sept. 16. Continuing in the same format as last year, the programs first 100 grants will be directed to educators who have been teaching three years or less.

Community Foundation Of Southern Arizona Scholarships
The Community Foundation for Southern Arizona operates outside the Arizona Community Foundation system and provides additional scholarship opportunities for residents of Cochise, Pima and Santa Cruz counties, and the parts of Maricopa, Pinal, Yuma, Graham and Greenlee counties that are south of the Gila River.
The General Scholarship Program is open to graduating area high school students who have a demonstrable financial need. Other scholarship programs administered by the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona include:
- the Skyline Country Club Scholarship for employees of the club and their children
- the Splendido Residents Association Scholarships for employees of Splendido at Rancho Vistoso and their children
