Serenity Prayer Principles In The Bible
The Serenity Prayer is a petition to God asking for calmness and peace in all matters of life. It asks for strength and courage to alter the matters within a persons control and for acceptance in matters which cannot be changed. Ultimately, the prayer requests the ability to identify which circumstances are amenable to change.
1. God directs us.
Proverbs 20:24 teaches us, A persons steps are directed by the LORD. How then can anyone understand their own way?
Gods righteousness and providence control a persons paths, steps, and directions. The believer must accept His direction and influence before inner-calmness and peace can be experienced.
2. There are some things we cannot change.
Titus 3:9 teaches us to avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law for they are unprofitable and vain.
Man does not have the ability to change his family tree, science, or factual history. Debating and questioning factual matters are of no helpful consequence and only results in confusion and unrest.
3. We need Gods help to discern wisely.
In Matthew 16:3, it is written, nd in the morning, Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast. You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.
4. The power to overcome sin comes from God.
5. We must surrender to Gods good ways, not continue in our sinful ways.
The Serenity Prayer In Alcoholics Anonymous
The recovery group, Alcoholics Anonymous, incorporates the abridged form of the Serenity Prayer in its 12-step program, viewing the road to full recovery as a spiritual journey. The prayer provides spiritual encouragement to willing participants by breaking down each essential step to recovery. The first being acceptance.
Upon joining Alcoholics Anonymous, the participant accepts the negative presence and power that alcohol has in her or her life. Any damage or harm that has been done in the alcoholics life up to the present point cannot be altered or amended. The prayer requests the wisdom to determine what can be changed and what cannot be altered. This knowledge and application force the participant to realize he or she cannot control the urges or the effects of alcohol on his or her body but has the power to control the act of consuming alcoholic beverages in excess or placing oneself in places or circumstances detrimental to sobriety.

Recognize God’s Hand In Your Life
The full serenity prayer also says, “trusting that He will make all things right if i surrender to His Will.” Sometimes taking time to count your blessings and realize God has helped you in your life helps ease the stress of worrying about things outside of your control. It also reaffirms in your heart that God is with you and will bless you as you strive to change your life for the better.
Bible Verses About Addiction And Recovery
1 Corinthians 10:13 – There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.1 Peter 5:8 – Be sober, be vigilant because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:James 1:12-15 – Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.1 John 2:16 – For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.1 Corinthians 15:33 – Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.1 Peter 5:10 – But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.James 4:7 – Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Courage To Change The Things I Can
If surrender is yin, courage is the yangthe courage to take action on the things you can control. Sometimes, its just your perceptions, and other times, its your actions and will. Unjust and unfortunate events happen, but what will you do about them? May you gather the courage to do the right things you need to do regardless of the fear.
Applying The Serenity Prayer To Your Life
The truth about life is that we cannot change people and most situations. All we can really do is change ourselves.
Trying to change what we should not, only leads to frustration. It’s important that we accept that God’s Word is true and that He has a plan. We can have great peace knowing that despite the storm we may be facing, God is guiding us to green pastures.
Here are some steps you can take to applying peace to your life by examining the shortened version of the Serenity Prayer.

What Is The Serenity Prayer
There are various versions of the Serenity Prayer, but the most commonly known one is this:
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
courage to change the things I can,
and wisdom to know the difference.
The full Serenity Prayer from which the above is quoted is longer and more elaborate.
God, give me grace to accept with serenity
the things that cannot be changed,
Courage to change the things
which should be changed,
and the Wisdom to distinguish
the one from the other.
Living one day at a time,
Enjoying one moment at a time,
Accepting hardship as a pathway to peace,
Taking, as Jesus did,
This sinful world as it is,
Not as I would have it,
Trusting that You will make all things right,
If I surrender to Your will,
So that I may be reasonably happy in this life,
And supremely happy with You forever in the next.
It is a powerful prayer seeking help from the Lord so we can graciously accept what we cannot change and courageously change what we can.

A New Serenity Prayer
God, grant me the serenityto accept the people I cannot change, which is pretty much everyone, since Im clearly not you, God.At least not the last time I checked.
And while youre at it, God,please give me the courageto change what I need to change about myself, which is frankly a lot, since, once again,Im not you, which means Im not perfect. Its better for me to focus on changing myselfthan to worry about changing other people, who, as youll no doubt remember me saying,I cant change anyway.
Finally, give me the wisdom to just shut upwhenever I think that Im clearly smarterthan everyone else in the room, that no one knows what theyre talking about except me,or that I alone have all the answers.
Basically, God,to remember that Imnot you.
Fr. James Martin, SJ, is a Jesuit priest, editor at large of America, consultor to the Vaticans Dicastery for Communication and the author of many books, including the New York Times bestsellers The Jesuit Guide to Everything, Jesus: A Pilgrimage and Learning to Pray.
When Can You Use This Prayer
Sometimes life can get out of hand. Maybe you are suffering from addiction and trying to recover, or maybe you are subconsciously choosing to care about many different things that are making life tough. The intent of the prayer is to help you recognize what you can and cannot control and find wisdom to discern what you can change in your life versus some things that you cannot. In addition, the serenity prayer, despite its length, is full of core Christian values that are important reminders to any follower of Christ.
For example, you may have some bad habits that you want to change but know it is incredibly difficult to reverse bad habits. This prayer aims to ask God for help to help you identify what small steps you can take to start making positive change. Wisdom comes with experience and the serenity prayer helps you ask God to attain this wisdom so you do not waste efforts trying to change things you cannot – such as other people, or macro-level issues that truly are out of reach.

Biblical Truths Of The Serenity Prayer
Chaos continues when we try to change things or people that we shouldn’t or can’t, and serenity is the farthest component of our lives. Accepting God’s plan and His purpose for your life will bring the serenity you seek. Here are three truths from Scripture about peace and serenity that can be applied to the words of the Serenity Prayer.
Get Busy After You Pray
After praying, try taking action and seeing how your prayer sets you up for success on things you can change. As the Bible says, “faith without works is dead.” It does no good to believe in changing, and not taking action toward those changes. As you train you mind, with the help of the prayer, to focus on actionable changes in life, you may find you worry less about things you cannot control.
There may be many more things you can do to make the serenity prayer more meaningful in your life. God wants to bless you for your efforts in prayer. This prayer is a great starting point for many, as it asks the Lord for peace, for help to discern what to change, for focus, happiness, and to obey His will.

Generations of recovering alcoholics, soldiers, weary parents, exploited workers and just about anybody feeling beaten down by life have found solace in a short prayer that begins, God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change.
Now the Serenity Prayer is about to endure a controversy over its authorship that is likely to be anything but serene.
For more than 70 years, the composer of the prayer was thought to be the Protestant theologian Reinhold Niebuhr, one of modern Christianitys towering figures. Niebuhr, who died in 1971, said he was quite sure he had written it, and his wife, Ursula, also a prominent theologian, dated its composition to the early 1940s.
His daughter Elisabeth Sifton, a book editor and publisher, wrote a book about the prayer in 2003 in which she described her father first using it in 1943 in an ordinary Sunday service at a church in the bucolic Massachusetts town of Heath, where the Niebuhr family spent summers.
Some refer to the prayer as if it were a proverb, while others appear to claim it as their own poetry. None attribute the prayer to a particular source. And they never mention Reinhold Niebuhr.
Alcoholics Anonymous also embraced it and circulated it widely as a motto for its 12-step program.
What Other People Think Of You
Ever since I was a kid, I have been self-conscious. About my looks. About my personality. About my reputation. I would try to change peoples perceptions of me all the time.
I would do anything to please others and to make sure they dont judge me wrongly. As you can guess, I developed social anxiety. Even after being aware of this, it was hard for me to let go of it because childhood programming is hard to change.
But then I realized something
It wasnt the others judgment about me I was afraid of, but I was afraid of judging myself. Someones opinion of me has nothing to do with me. I dont have to agree or disagree or do anything about it. I can let it be.
The only things that matter are self-awareness, self-acceptance, self-love, and self-improvement. If I know who I am, I dont need to convince anyone. I dont need an approval certificate from anyone. I dont need permission from anyone.
Whats not in your controlOthers peoples actions and perceptions about you.
Whats in your controlYour actions and your perception about yourself.
