In order to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles in the UK, the government has created different grants through the Office of Zero Emission Vehicles that you can use to make both EV leasing and purchasing more affordable and accessible . Itâs not just the government, in fact organisations like the Energy Saving Trust have also created similar grants that can make switching to an EV more affordable to drivers in the UK, plus thereâs also tax breaks on EVs!

Success Story: Build Grant In Idaho And Wyoming

In 2020, USDOTs BUILD program awarded $20 million to Wyoming and Idaho for the Teton Mobility Corridor Improvements Project. This rural project will implement a series of multimodal improvements along the Idaho 33/Wyoming 22 corridor. The project includes the purchase of two electric local buses among many other improvements to the corridor.

The Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity discretionary grant program provides an opportunity for USDOT to invest in road, rail, transit, and port projects that achieve national objectives.

The eligibility requirements of RAISE allow project sponsors at the State and local levels to obtain funding for multimodal, multi-jurisdictional projects that are more difficult to support through traditional USDOT programs.

For FY21, RAISE increased program focus on zero-emission vehicle infrastructure, including EV charging.

  • Eligible EV activities: LDV charging, infrastructure planning, commercial charging, public transportation charging
  • Eligible applicants: States, Tribes, localities, transportation providers

Among them is a new apartment charging grant which will make it easier for people who live in apartments and multi-unit dwellings to charge an EV. He also announced an expansion to the home charger grant which will enable any tenants and homeowners to apply for a grant, whether they own an EV or not. This can also be used for visitor use or at rented accommodation.

A new trial to promote and encourage the electrification of the commercial fleet was also announced, giving businesses the opportunity to test an EV free of charge for at least 3 months. For sports clubs across the island of Ireland, there will be new funding to install a network of publicly accessible chargers for members and visitors. Government cuts electric car grant from £3000 to £2500

In April 2021, the UK Government introduced new benefit-in-kind tax rates^ for the tax year 2022/23. This means company car drivers of 100% electric vehicles pay 2% BIK. Weve worked this out as an average saving of £3,496 in the first year^*. So, why not give yourself the equivalent of a pay rise by switching you petrol or diesel company car to a 100% electric Nissan LEAF.

    Exemption From Road Tax

Firstly, as of 2020, fully electric cars are exempt from Vehicle Excise Duty or as itâs more commonly known, road tax. The reason for this is this tax is based upon how much CO2 your vehicle emits and as EVs donât emit any CO2 theyâre exempt from this tax. Energy Saving Trust Grant

If you live in Scotland and donât qualify for the EHVS, donât worry! You can still get £250 off the installation of a home charging point with the Energy Saving Trust Grant. This grant isnât a government grant, as the Energy Saving Trust are an independent organisation who aim to protect our climate. This does mean that if youâre eligible for the EVHS grant, you can actually use both to get your home charging point at an even better price!

The way this grant works is you can apply to be reimbursed for whatever monetary amount you are eligible for, prior to the installation taking place. If you qualify, youâll be reimbursed following the installation. We recommend having a look at the Energy Saving Trust website to get a more in-depth explanation of how it all works.

If youâd like to apply, all you need to do is fill out a form, send the quote from your installer and have documented proof that you either own or lease your EV. Please make sure you apply before the installation takes place, as you wonât be eligible if you apply after the charging point has already been installed!

Please be aware that as mentioned above, this grant is only available for people living in Scotland. All of the other grants on this list are available across the UK, this grant is the only exception.

The Benefits Of Switching To An Electric Vehicle

  • Cost comparison calculator
  • Electric Vehicles play a central role in our Climate Action Plan, in decarbonisation of our transport sector, and in eliminating emissions from our private car fleet. Electrification of the vehicle fleet offers a pathway to zero tailpipe emissions, with several co-benefits such as improved air quality, reduced noise pollution, and less fossil fuel dependence. The Climate Action Plan target is for 945,000 EVs on the road by 2030, with 845,000 of these to be private passenger cars. There are currently over 45,000 EVs registered on Irish roads so the pace of uptake must increase over the coming years to achieve our fleet electrification targets.

Categories For Ultra Low Emission Vehicles

Under the new grant levels, ultra low emission vehicles have been numerically categorised. These categories are based on the CO2 emissions of the vehicles and their zero emission range how far they can travel and still create zero emissions.

    They are defined as follows:

    • Category 1 vehicles have CO emissions of less than 50g/km and a zero emission range of at least 70 miles
    • Category 2 vehicles have CO emissions of less than 50g/km and a zero emission range between 10 and 69 miles
    • Category 3 vehicles have CO emissions of 50 to 75g/km and a zero emission range of at least 20 miles

Each category has different access to the grant. Since the changes to the grant in 2018, only category 1 vehicles are eligible, category 2 and 3 cars are not.

    Electric Car Grant Faqs

Electric vehicle scheme announced by the NSW Government | 7NEWS

Can I get an electric car grant for used cars or pre-registered cars?

No. The grant is only available for the first owner of brand new cars, ruling out any used cars, including pre-registered vehicles, which normally count a dealership as the first owner. Home charging grants are available for eligible buyers of new or used cars, however.

How do I claim the grant?

You dont need to do anything. The supplying dealer does it on your behalf and automatically reduces the price of the car by the value of the grant.

Can I get the electric car grant if Im purchasing on finance?

Yes, the grant will be deducted from the total price, which will reduce your monthly payments.

Can I be paid the electric car grant in cash?

This isnt an option. As its designed to boost sales of plug-in cars, the grant is only used to adjust the price: you never actually see the money, let alone get it in your pocket.

What Is The Electric Vehicle Grant

The electric vehicle grant isa Government-led initiative that gives customers a discount when buying a brand-new electric car.

The discount is given to manufacturers and their dealerships and is automatically removed from the cost of the car when you buy it. It aims to help make vehicles with lower emissions more affordable and encourage more people to pick them over petrol or diesel-powered cars.

The grant is specifically for new cars that give off fewer Co2 emissions. A vehicle must have Co2 emissions of less than 50g/km and travel at least 112km without any emissions to be eligible for the discount. As you’d imagine, that includes all electric cars and some hybrids too. It now pays up to a maximum of £2,500 while the car itself must cost less than £35,000 to qualify.

The amount of the electric car grant – often referred to as the Plug-in Car Grant – has fallen steadily since its introduction a decade ago, when it was worth up to 35% of the cost of a new vehicle, with a £5,000 cap.

What Does The Change Mean For Drivers

Because of the battery technology that powers them, electric cars are much more expensive than petrol or diesel ones. For example, the average price of a VW Golf is £22,833. However, a VW E-Golf costs on average £27,575.

The purpose of the grant is to help incentivise people to purchase these more expensive cars that release fewer emissions and therefore have less of an impact on the environment.

Now that the maximum cost of a car eligible for the grant has reduced to £35,000, it has also meant that more expensive models like the Tesla 3, which costs £42,000, no longer fit the criteria for the discount.

But the Government claims this doesn’t reduce the overall number of cars eligible for the grant, with the number of electric cars actually costing less than £35,000 growing by 50% since 2019. It also firmly believes the changes to the funding will allow more people to benefit from the financial incentive.

However, with the maximum discount available on any vehicle now reduced, this does mean that certain models that sit at the upper end of the cost band will be £500 more expensive than they were last year. For example, the VW E-Golf that costs £27,575 at retail wouldve cost consumers £24,575 last year with the grant. Now that the maximum discount has been reduced, it will cost consumers £25,075.
