Business Grants For Veterans
Many veterans go into entrepreneurship after their service. Unfortunately, while there are a lot of loans that are specifically for veterans, there are very few grants.
Your best bet is to visit a Veterans Business Outreach Center, where they can point you to any local grant that you may be eligible for. Each center also offers training and access to other small business resources for veterans.
The Streetshares Foundation: The Streetshares Foundation is the only reliable online source for veteran grants. They offer grants and loans for small businesses run be veterans or their spouses.
Grants are awarded each month to businesses based on how much social impact they have, and how strong their business idea is.
GrantWatch: GrantWatch doesnt offer any grants themselves, but keeps on top of new grants that are available for veterans.
Its a great way to find local grants that you might not find using the other databases on this page.

This enables them to adapt or modify their premises or operating model in order to address new challenges in their trading environment.
BBF criteria have been devised to reflect feedback received through the Covid-19 Business Survey recently conducted by the council and to ensure the optimum economic impact.
The BBF focusses on providing grant funding as a contribution towards specific projects or investments being undertaken by applicants in direct response to Covid-19 and is not geared towards addressing working capital requirements or day-to-day cashflow issues.
BBF grants will provide 100% of eligible project costs , up to a maximum grant award of £2,500 with one application per business.

Applying For The Back To Business Grant
The State of Illinois recently announced a new $250 million Back to Business grant program to assist small businesses in the recovery from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and associated economic shutdowns. The grant application opened on August 18, 2021,and is expected to close by mid-October or when funds run out so were encouraging our downtown businesses to apply ASAP!
But Im just a sole proprietor Im not eligible!
Sole proprietors are certainly eligible for the B2B grant. If you owned your business for at least one month of 2019 and throughout 2020, the State of Illinois has simplified the number of documents you need to submit. Overall, your tax returns should show that your gross revenues went down from 2019 to 2020 but there is also a way for you to explain any circumstances that arent reflected in your returns.
But theres too much paperwork involved in getting a state grant.
The State of Illinois has really simplified this grant process. You only need to submit five documents to be considered:
- Business Owner ID
- 2019 Federal Tax Return
- One business bank statement from between April and December 2020, inclusive that reflects business expenses
- Most recent business bank statement
But I just purchased this business in 2020.
If you purchased a business in 2020 and have the previous owners tax return from 2019, you can still apply. The business must have been in operation at least one month in 2019 to be eligible, whether you or someone else owned it.

Are There Any Downsides To Business Grants
A variety of factors make many business owners skeptical of the free money that business grants offer. While every grant has a different application period, rules, terms, and conditions, here are some potential downsides you should keep in mind when applying.
As mentioned above, business grant funds are taxable income for IRS purposes. The funds will still be free money for your business, but you will need to make sure you dont spend the entire payout without planning for the added income in your tax bill.
Business grant applications take time. Youre already a time-crunched business owner wearing a million hats, do you really have time to apply for every business grant opportunity you come across? Its a valid complaint about business grants. The likelihood of winning the grant can be small depending on the size of the contest, so you have to make your own cost/benefit analysis to figure out if your most precious asset time is worth it.
Small business grants may require campaigning. Many business grants require a social media component, where you campaign or share something publicly about your grant application. Thats not necessarily a negative if you have an active and vocal social media following, but campaigning does take additional time and some business owners may understandably not want to be as public about their search for money.
What Is The Back To Business Grant Program

For 2020 into 2022, businesses around the globe suffered significant economic loss as a result of the pandemic. Between mandatory shutdowns, stay at home orders, and self-isolation, the U.S. economy lost trillions. Many businesses shut their doors for good and employees lost their jobs or quit. Illinois Governor, JB Pritzker, decided to roll out an economic recovery plan. Known as the Back to Business Grant Program , the plan called for relief to businesses hit hardest by the pandemic.

Small Business Development Centers
Once youve exhausted your searches for grants from federal agencies, the next stop on your list should be local and state business grants. You may be able to hit paydirt and find some of these on your own, but theres a free, local resource that may help.
Small Business Development Centers are a business owners best friend. Local, regional, state, and national offices mentor small business owners and help them understand business financing options, craft marketing strategies, and connect to other local small business owners .
One thing they can help with, for example, is creating a business plan that can help you create an exciting vision for your company, and a compelling pitch on how youll use the grant money. They may also be able to help you navigate federal small business grants.
One thing they can help with is navigating the grant process. Very few people have as much visibility as SBDC advisors do on the local business grant scene. Its the one appointment you cant afford not to make when searching for small business grants.
